Sumter is both a city and a county in South Carolina
and located near the middle part of the state. Steeped in
tradition and history, Sumter has many fun things to see and
rural land to explore.
Economy
Much of Sumter is still rural, so there is an abundance of
farmland and agricultural based companies. Even though much
of Sumter is still rural, the economy of the area has grown
in recent years and welcomed high tech industries. New
companies and manufacturing corporations have moved into the
area, providing new jobs for residents.
Schools
There are three high schools, three middle schools, and
approximately six elementary schools in the Sumter County
area. The Sumter County schools are dedicated to helping
students achieve their goals and realize their potential.
With new facilities and great student/teacher ratios these
schools are recognized for excellence in education.
Neighborhoods
Located near the center of the state, Sumter is very close
to Millwood, Mulberry, East Sumter, Lakewood, Cherryvale and
Privateer. Camden and Kershaw County are also about 30 miles
away. It is approximately 50 miles from Columbia.
Hospitals
The Clarendon Memorial Hospital is located in Manning about
22 miles away, the Kershaw County Medical Center is
about 30 miles away in Camden
and
Tuomey Healthcare is
located in Sumter.
Things to Do
Sumter is centrally located in South Carolina, making it a
perfect place to live and play and be able to enjoy both the
beaches and the mountains with just a short drive. A 90
minute drive can put you near the Blue Ridge Mountains, or
Myrtle Beach for a day of fun in the outdoors. You can take
a 30 minute drive and be near Lake Wateree and Camden, which
is the home of many horse races throughout the year. Sumter
is also home to Shaw Air Force Base, and there are many
things to see around the base pertaining to the air force
and Shaw’s accomplishments over the years. Sumter is a
larger city with a small town attitude and friendly
residents. You can visit Swan Lake and the Iris Gardens to
see the beautiful swans and lovely flowers and gardens.
There are many fun events and festivals that take place each
year in Sumter for residents and visitors to enjoy.
